Case Study: Detecting Personality Traits using Handwriting Analysis

Did you know your handwriting can tell a lot about you?
Your handwriting can show whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, whether you are a person who has more of an emotional mindset or more of a practical mindset. In other words, it can reveal your personality traits.
Here’s an example: With the help of a feature called Pressure, a graphologist can tell if a person has strong emotions or a person is Practical.
We know how hard it can be for a college student to deal with academics pressure, career pressure, peer pressure, and so on, but as adults, we can share our emotions and confide in our feelings. But can school students understand and express their problems?
That’s when we came across a topic called “Detecting Personality Traits Using Handwriting Analysis”. As a part of my Engineering Course, we had to do a major project. Our project aims to detect personality traits through handwriting and let them be analysed by a professional and thus give the students guidance.
Problem Statement
“The education system has to evaluate the performance of the students and it is solely based on the marks, the students score. This makes it tough for the system to help the students. The system has to take care of the situation, so it doesn’t remain the same and the students are helped. ”
A person’s Handwriting tells a lot about their personality. So, analysing the handwriting of students and guiding them on how to bring changes will not only lead to the educational but personal development of the students which will be boosted to the system.
While this project already has a feature that scans a document and determines a person’s personality trait, I conducted my own research and added few more features, such as giving an individual an online test for more accuracy, connecting an individual with a therapist on the app itself, or contacting the therapist by making an appointment. The app will continue to monitor, keep track of the user’s history, and make appropriate recommendations.
Pain Points / Problems
· It is easy to scan and capture the document, but hard to recognize the text, as everyone has different handwriting.
· Although it mainly focuses on kids, anyone can use it (no age limit) so the UI has to be user-friendly and easy to use.
· People often have to search for other apps or visit other sites for therapy or counseling, keeping in that mind; I tried to add fit this feature in this app itself.
· I came across few Apps with almost the same features, but I could see they lacked clean UI, colour palette. A clean UI is important for user-friendly apps.
Solution
· With the help of segmentation such as line, word, and letter the document can be easily detected.
· No need to search for a therapist or search for quizzes to know you. Call, chat and know yourself on this app.
· This app will keep track of user’s history and their progress.
· This app will not only have a scanner to detect user’s handwriting, but also few online quizzes which will increase the accuracy of detection.
· If a user wants to chat or consult a therapist, the history of the user can be shared directly with the therapist, which will give the therapist some idea about them. (This is an optional feature since not all users can be comfortable).

Conclusion
It was a challenging, but entertaining journey. The task was to help people to know their traits, analyse their behaviour, and help them progress. By using various parameters and techniques such as Segmentation, Size, Pressure, Margin, etc it was possible to recognize the text written by the user and give accurate answers. There were other problems like creating an attractive and user-friendly app, provide maximum facilities.
In the future, other features can be added such as palm reading to detect the personality of the user.
